 por. pilot Jan Grzech
Jan Grzech graduated from the SPL in Deblin in 1938. He was only 26 years old when he was killed in action ( KIA ). He was awarded The Cross of Valor (Polish military decoration, Krzyz Walecznych). It is awarded to an individual who has demonstrated deeds of valor and courage on the battlefield. This medal is given only in wartime or shortly after.
On November 23, 1941, five pilots went down during a single mission. Squadron 315 operated as an escort to Hurribombers. On the way back, the formation ran into heavy AA (anti- aircraft) fire, and was then bounced by JG26. In the words of the Wing Dairy, "all aircrafts that returned from this operation were shot up".
Jan Grzech was one of five pilots killed during this tragic mission on 23 November 1941. He was shot down by German flak with Spitfire MK VB, AB 934, code PK-E, while crossing the French coast near Dunkirk, France.
